What Conditioning Can and Cannot Change
What conditioning reliably does: reduces inter-fibre friction, lowers the force needed to comb through wet hair, reduces static, smooths the cuticle surface and improves perceived softness and shine. Lower combing force means less breakage caused by grooming — one of the clearest, best-supported cosmetic benefits.
What it does not do: conditioners and hair masks act on the hair fibre that already exists. They do not reactivate follicles, increase follicle count, treat androgenetic alopecia, stop telogen effluvium, reverse scarring alopecia or permanently heal split ends. Breakage along the length and shedding from the root are different problems with different causes.
Softer, shinier, more manageable hair is a real and worthwhile cosmetic outcome. It is not evidence that structural damage has been reversed. Assess results on dry hair over several weeks, changing one variable at a time.
