Rebonding is the strongest chemistry on the salon menu: a reducing agent opens the disulphide bonds in your hair, tension and heat straighten it, and a neutraliser locks the new shape in place. It works, and it does not undo. The treated length stays straight until it is cut off, new roots grow in your natural texture, and the band where those two meet is where almost every serious rebonding injury happens. What is hair rebonding?

Hair rebonding is a chemical straightening treatment that alters the structure of the treated hair fibre. A reducing cream opens a large proportion of the disulphide bonds that hold your curl pattern, the hair is mechanically straightened under tension and sealed with heat, and an oxidising neutraliser then refixes those bonds in the new, straighter configuration. The treated length stays straighter until it grows out or is cut off. New hair emerging from the follicle keeps your natural texture, because nothing about the process reaches or changes the follicle itself.

The mechanism of harm

Rebonding new roots is not the same as reprocessing old lengths

A touch-up is a different procedure from the original service, even though it uses the same products. Almost every catastrophic rebonding outcome we see traces back to this distinction being ignored.

The realityPreviously rebonded hair has already had a large share of its disulphide bonds opened and refixed. There is materially less structure left to work with. Applying full-strength reducing chemistry to it a second time is not a repeat of the first service — it is a much harsher one.
The assumption“A little overlap at the join is unavoidable.”
The realityA millimetre or two is genuinely hard to avoid and rarely the problem. A centimetre applied casually because it is quicker is where hair snaps in a line — and it snaps at that exact height, which is why breakage from overlap looks so distinctively uniform.
The assumption“My hair is fine now, so a touch-up is low risk.”
The realityDamage from chemical straightening is cumulative and often silent until it is not. Hair can look and feel acceptable while its elasticity has fallen substantially. This is exactly what an elasticity check and a strand test are for, and why they matter more at the second appointment than the first.
The assumption“I can do the roots at home between appointments.”
The realityRoot-only application at the back of your own head, with correct timing and no overlap, is not achievable without help. Home rebonding is the highest-risk version of an already demanding procedure, and the damage it causes is frequently unrecoverable.

The single sentence worth remembering. Never assume previously treated hair can safely tolerate the same chemical exposure again — and say that sentence out loud at your touch-up appointment, because it is the client, not the stylist, who lives with the answer.

What is physically happening inside the strand

The cuticle decides how your hair behaves

The outer layer is a stack of overlapping keratin scales. When they lie flat, light reflects evenly and neighbouring strands slide past each other — that reads as shine and smoothness. When they are lifted by porosity, alkaline products, mechanical wear or humidity, strands catch on each other and you get frizz. Much of what a smoothening treatment delivers cosmetically comes from getting these scales to lie flat and stay flat.

Formulation

The four systems in a rebonding service

A rebonding service is four chemistries working in sequence. Understanding what each one is for is the difference between agreeing to a procedure and consenting to it.

Ammonium thioglycolate is the reference reducing agent for permanent deformation of hair, and related compounds such as cysteamine and its derivatives are used similarly. Applied at alkaline pH, the thiol exchanges with the disulphide bonds in keratin and opens them. Concentration, pH and time together decide how many bonds open — which is why processing is timed and why extending it to chase a straighter finish is a trade against your hair.

What to ask: which product system, what active category, what processing time, and how that time was chosen for your hair rather than for the average client.

After rinsing, an oxidising lotion — commonly a dilute peroxide-based neutraliser — reconnects the opened bonds in their new positions. This is the stabilising half of the process, and its timing matters as much as the softening stage: neutralise too early and the shape does not hold; too late, or unevenly, and the hair is left with a proportion of bonds never properly reformed, which shows up later as weakness.

What to ask: how long the neutraliser stays on, and whether the whole head is covered evenly rather than section by section as an afterthought.

Cationic conditioners, fatty alcohols, silicones, hydrolysed proteins, amino acids, ceramides and panthenol. After a process that has opened and refixed bonds and applied high heat, the fibre needs lipid and surface repair to feel acceptable. This is genuinely useful and entirely cosmetic — it improves how the hair behaves, not how much structure survived.

Thermal polymers and silicones applied before ironing reduce, but do not remove, the cost of high heat on softened hair. The far more important protections are not products at all: section size, plate temperature matched to hair condition, and the number of passes. A stylist who irons small sections at a moderate temperature is protecting your hair more effectively than any spray.

Glycerin, panthenol, sodium PCA and propylene glycol hold water in the fibre and keep the finish supple rather than merely smooth. In Mumbai’s monsoon they can also draw in more atmospheric water than you want, which is one reason the same treatment behaves differently in June and in January.

Amodimethicone, dimethicone, polyquaterniums, argan and macadamia oils, shea butter and ceramide systems. These give the gloss and the humidity resistance, and they buffer the fibre against the iron. Note the tension with the “natural” framing: a formula built on an amino acid is still, sensibly, carrying a good deal of synthetic conditioning chemistry.

Fragrance is heavily used here, because thiol chemistry has a characteristic sulphurous smell even in its mildest form. That means a higher fragrance load than in many products, which matters if you are fragrance-sensitive. Preservative systems are the other common cause of reaction, and some preservatives release formaldehyde under heat — which is why this page has a separate transparency section rather than relying on the word “cysteine” to reassure you.

Boundaries

Straight hair is not the same as repaired hair

Rebonding delivers the most visible change in this category. That is exactly why the boundaries need stating clearly.

  1. It does not regenerate follicles or affect anything below the scalp surface.
  2. It does not treat hair loss, slow shedding or stimulate growth.
  3. It does not repair damaged hair. Opening and refixing bonds costs structure; nothing is added back.
  4. It does not change the texture of hair that has not grown yet. New roots arrive exactly as they always would.
  5. It does not make fragile hair stronger — it asks more of hair that already has less to give.
  6. It cannot guarantee zero breakage, and no honest practitioner will offer that.
  7. It cannot reverse severe bleaching damage, and on badly bleached hair it can be genuinely dangerous.
  8. It does not seal split ends or remove the need for regular trimming.
  9. It does not treat dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis or any scalp condition.
  10. It cannot be undone. There is no reversal procedure and no product that restores the original pattern.
  11. It does not remove maintenance — root regrowth is a permanent feature of having had it done.
  12. It does not produce identical results on two heads, because product, technique and hair history all differ.

Why this matters more here than elsewhere. Every other treatment in this series either fades or can be waited out. This one cannot. A decision made in twenty minutes commits you to a year or more of living with the result, and to a maintenance pattern that carries its own risk. That is not an argument against it — it is an argument for making the decision properly.

The appointment

What a properly run rebonding appointment looks like

Eight stages across four to eight hours. The stages that decide your outcome are the two nobody watches: how long the softening cream stays on, and how carefully the roots are isolated at a touch-up.

Stage 1 · 10–15 minutes

Consultation and full chemical history

Every previous chemical service is recorded with dates: colour, bleach, highlights, henna, perm, relaxer, keratin, smoothening and any earlier rebonding. On this treatment an incomplete history is not an inconvenience — it is the most common root cause of a bad outcome.

Safeguard: disclose everything, including services you regret or were told were “natural”.

Stage 2 · 20–30 minutes

Elasticity check and strand test

Hair is stretched wet and released to judge how much give and recovery it has, and a hidden section is processed exactly as the full head would be. Low elasticity is the single clearest signal to stop, and it is invisible to the eye.

Safeguard: the test must be allowed to fail. On this treatment there is no correcting a wrong answer afterwards.

Stage 3 · 10–20 minutes

Clarifying wash

One or two clarifying washes remove silicone buildup and hard-water minerals so the reducing system meets the fibre evenly. Patchy processing almost always starts here.

Safeguard: no scratching or vigorous massage — an abraded scalp is the wrong surface for alkaline chemistry.

Stage 4 · 10 minutes

Controlled towel dry and sectioning

Hair is brought to a defined dampness — usually around eighty per cent dry — and divided into fine sections. Too wet and the product dilutes unevenly; too dry and it will not distribute.

Safeguard: fine sections, not thick ones. Thick sectioning is how the middle of the head ends up untreated.

Stage 5 · 20–40 minutes

Application — and root isolation at a touch-up

On a first service the cream is applied along the lengths, kept clear of the scalp. On a touch-up it must go onto new growth only, with the previously treated length protected. This is slow, fiddly work, and rushing it is where the damage happens.

Safeguard: ask directly how the treated lengths will be protected. There should be a specific answer.

Stage 6 · 20–60 minutes

Controlled processing

The cream acts for a period matched to hair type and condition, with the hair combed straight. Elasticity is checked during processing on a well-run service. Signs of over-processing include hair that feels gummy, stretches without recovering, or begins to feel unusually soft.

Safeguard: burning, stinging or itching on the scalp means rinse now, not at the end of the timer.

Stage 7 · 20–50 minutes

Straightening, heat sealing and neutralising

The hair is rinsed, dried, then ironed in thin sections to set the alignment, after which the neutraliser is applied to refix the bonds. Even, unhurried coverage at this stage is what determines whether the result is stable or quietly under-fixed.

Safeguard: ask what iron temperature is being used and why. “Maximum, for everyone” is not a protocol.

Stage 8 · 10–20 minutes

Finishing, aftercare and the regrowth plan

You should leave knowing the product used, when you may first wash, when to return for roots, and what the transition will look like at three and six months. That last conversation is the one most often skipped, and the one clients most wish they had had.

Safeguard: get the product name and dates in writing. Any future colourist will need them.

Total appointment: typically 4 to 8 hours. Long, dense or coarse hair sits at the upper end, and a rebonding service compressed into two hours has skipped something that mattered.

Why people book it

Potential cosmetic outcomes

Stated at the level the evidence supports. Every outcome depends on formulation, hair pattern, damage level, porosity, heat exposure and aftercare — results vary substantially, and honest providers say so.

Enhanced shine

An aligned, sealed cuticle reflects light in one direction instead of scattering it. The most immediate and most photographed effect.

Reduced visible frizz

With the pattern relaxed and the surface sealed, the strand swells and roughens less in humidity. In a Mumbai monsoon this is what people notice first.

Reduced styling time

Most people report cutting blow-dry and iron time substantially. Less daily heat is a genuine long-term benefit for hair health.

Improved combability

Lower surface friction means combing pulls less and snaps fewer hairs at the ends.

Genuinely straight hair

The strongest and most reliable straightening result available in a salon. If poker-straight hair is the goal, this is the treatment that delivers it.

Controlled volume

Useful if your hair reads bulky rather than full. Weigh it carefully if you value volume, because you will lose some.

Softer texture

Conditioning agents and deposited proteins leave the hand feel markedly better, which is a large part of the day-one impression.

Long-lasting on treated length

No fading, no gradual return. The treated hair stays as it is until you cut it off, which for many people is precisely the appeal.

What is not a benefit

It does not repair damage, treat hair loss, grow hair or remove split ends. And “permanent” describes the treated fibre only — your roots are unaffected and always will be.

Decision guide

Start from your actual goal, not the result you saw on someone else

Rebonding is the right answer for a narrower group of people than the number who book it. Find your goal below.

My goal is pin-straight hair
Virgin, strong hair. You are the candidate this treatment was designed for. Book an assessment, insist on a strand test, and go in knowing about root regrowth.
Coloured hair. Possible with caution. Strand test first, space the services, and expect some tonal shift.
Bleached or highlighted hair. High risk. Consider a coating treatment instead, and treat any salon willing to proceed without an elasticity assessment as a warning.
Previously rebonded hair. Root-only application, planned deliberately. Never a full-length reapplication.

Rebonding is more chemistry than you need. Compare cysteine, hair botox or a keratin-type coating, all of which fade rather than growing out.

Limitations

Stronger straightening, stronger risk

This is the most intensive service in the category, and its risk profile is correspondingly the highest. None of it is a reason not to proceed with healthy hair and a careful operator — all of it is a reason to choose both.

Over-processing

Too long, too alkaline or too warm and more bonds open than can be reformed. Hair goes gummy and over-elastic during processing and brittle afterwards. The window between straight and damaged is narrower than clients imagine.

Thermal breakage

Ironing hair whose bonds are open is the single most damaging moment of the appointment. Plate temperature, section size and pass count matter more than any product used.

Dryness and roughness

Reduction plus heat costs some lipid and some protein. A well-conditioned formula offsets much of it; a bare one does not.

Lost volume and a flat finish

Fine hair relaxes quickly and can end up flatter than intended. Shorter processing and a lower iron temperature are the levers.

Colour fading and tonal shift

Both the alkaline softening stage and the oxidising neutraliser lift and shift colour. Plan colour services well apart, and rebond before you colour rather than after.

Overlap breakage

The signature injury of this treatment. Applying chemistry to already-rebonded hair at a touch-up causes hair to snap in a uniform line at that height. It is entirely preventable and entirely irreversible.

Chemical burns

Alkaline reducing cream on a scratched, freshly shampooed or inflamed scalp can cause genuine chemical burns. Burning during processing is a reason to rinse immediately — not to finish the timer.

Uneven straightening

Porosity varies along the length, especially on coloured hair, so sections can process at different rates. Fine sectioning and elasticity checks during processing are the fix.

When to seek medical review

A persistent or spreading scalp rash, blistering or swelling; breathing difficulty, wheeze or a persistent cough; or sudden increased shedding after the appointment. See a doctor and name the product used.

Transparency

Know the product. Know the process. Know the risk.

A premium product is not automatically a safe one, and a well-reviewed salon is not automatically the right salon for your hair. The questions below are the ones that actually predict your outcome.

Ask for the brand, the line and the active category. A salon that knows its product will answer immediately; one that cannot is improvising with irreversible chemistry.

Will previously treated lengths be protected?

On a touch-up this is the whole ballgame. There should be a specific technique described — barrier product, sectioning, careful application — not a reassurance.

What temperature, and how many passes?

A number, and a reason for that number. Fine, coloured or previously processed hair needs a lower setting and fewer passes than the salon default.

Is it compatible with my colour history?

Bleach, highlights, henna and previous straightening all change the answer. This is the question most often skipped and most often responsible for damage.

What happens if my scalp burns?

The correct answer is: tell me immediately and we rinse. Anything that involves finishing the timer first is the wrong answer.

Is a strand test being done?

On this treatment a strand test is not a courtesy. It is the only preview available of a change that cannot be undone.

Making it last

Aftercare, without the standard advice

Your result cannot wash out, so aftercare here is not about preserving it. It is entirely about protecting hair that has less structure than it had last week — and about managing the regrowth line without making things worse.

Wait 72 hours before washing

The bonds are still stabilising after neutralisation. Most protocols specify around three days, and this is one of the few aftercare rules with a real mechanism behind it.

Gentle, low-sulphate cleansing

Not to preserve the straightness — that is fixed — but because chemically processed hair tolerates aggressive surfactants poorly. Choose based on your scalp and buildup.

Protein and moisture, alternated

Reduction and refixing cost protein, so protein treatments genuinely help here. Alternate with moisture and lipids, and stop if hair starts to feel stiff or straw-like.

Wash in cooler water, less often

Each wash costs a little of the finish. Two or three times a week in lukewarm water rather than hot will noticeably extend it without letting the scalp suffer.

Far less heat, always protected

Your hair has just taken a substantial thermal load and no longer needs styling to look straight. Every additional iron pass from here is a withdrawal from an account you have already drawn on.

Protect from chlorine, salt and sun

All three shorten the result and stress hair whose bonds have been worked on. Wet hair with clean water and condition before swimming, and rinse straight after.

No tight ties for the first week

Tight bands, clips and hairstyles can set kinks into hair whose bonds are still settling, and cause breakage at the tension point. Loose and soft for the first several days.

Signs to delay a touch-up

Hair that stretches without recovering, feels gummy when wet, or snaps at the mid-lengths. Any of these means a touch-up should be postponed, not negotiated.

Touch-ups: new growth only

Every four to six months, applied strictly to new growth. Overlap onto treated lengths is the mechanism behind most serious rebonding damage — say this out loud at the appointment.

Lightweight conditioner

Every wash

Keeps the cuticle flat between washes without adding weight to a strand that is already carrying a deposit.

Look for
Cationic conditioners and fatty alcohols high in the list; a thin rather than buttery texture.
Skip if
Nothing — this one suits almost everyone. Use less of it if your hair is fine.

Moisture mask, protein-light

Weekly

Your hair has just received a large protein deposit. The job for the next few weeks is lipids and water, not more protein.

Look for
Ceramides, fatty acids, glycerin, panthenol. Protein low in the list or absent.
Skip if
It is protein-forward — stacking protein on protein is what makes hair stiff and snappy.

Anti-frizz serum

As needed

Extends the smooth finish between washes, particularly in monsoon humidity when the deposit starts to thin out.

Look for
A light silicone or oil blend in a small quantity. Two drops, mid-lengths to ends.
Skip if
Your hair is fine and already looks flat — this will compound it.

Heat protectant

Before any heat

You will still use a dryer or an iron occasionally. Your hair now needs less heat to look right, so lower the temperature and protect what you do use.

Look for
Evidence-based film formers and thermal polymers rather than an oil marketed as protection.

Never. If you apply heat, apply this first.

Pre-wash oil

Before washing

Coconut oil applied before washing has published support for reducing protein loss during the wash itself — one of the few genuinely evidence-backed home habits in haircare.

Look for
Plain coconut oil, applied 30 minutes to overnight before shampooing.
Skip if
Your scalp is oily or flaking — keep it on the lengths, never the roots.

“Rebonding produces a stronger structural change than any other treatment on this menu. Whether that is a good decision or a damaging one is settled almost entirely before the first product is opened — by elasticity, by bleaching history, and by whether anyone is willing to say no.”

I want to be fair to this treatment. Performed on healthy virgin hair by someone disciplined about timing and temperature, rebonding does something no gentler service can, and patients are often thrilled for years. I have no interest in scaring people away from a procedure that works.

But the failures I see are severe, and they are remarkably consistent. Two causes account for nearly all of them. The first is bleached hair: bleach has already broken a substantial share of the disulphide network, and rebonding asks that depleted structure to be opened again and refixed. The second is overlap — chemistry applied at a touch-up to hair that has already been through the process once. Both are decisions made in the salon, and both are preventable.

The other thing worth saying plainly is that root regrowth is not a complication. It is how this treatment works. Your follicles are untouched and will keep producing your natural texture for the rest of your life. Anyone who is not comfortable with a visible border at three months, or with a maintenance appointment twice a year indefinitely, has not been told what they are buying.

So my advice is short. Insist on an elasticity check and a strand test. Disclose every chemical service you have ever had, including the ones you were told were natural. Ask specifically how treated lengths will be protected at a touch-up. And if your hair is bleached, fragile or already snapping, please accept a gentler treatment — because on this one there is no second attempt.

Ten common mistakes people make

These are the errors that turn up most often in clinic after a salon smoothing or straightening service — some cost you the result, and some cost you the hair. None of them require expertise to avoid, only knowing to ask.

Letting the chemistry go over previously rebonded hair

This is the single most consequential error in the whole category. Hair that has already been reduced and re-fixed cannot take the process again without losing structural integrity. Touch-ups belong on new growth only.

Expecting the regrowth line not to appear

The treatment changes hair, not follicles. New growth arrives with your natural texture, and the line where it meets treated length is the expected outcome. Anyone promising otherwise is describing something the chemistry cannot do.

Booking a touch-up on the calendar rather than on the regrowth

The right interval is decided by how much new growth there is, not by a fixed number of months. Going early is exactly how overlap happens.

Having it done on bleached or highlighted hair without advice

Bleaching has already broken structure. Adding full reduction on top of that is where the worst breakage cases come from. This is a question for a professional assessment, not a booking form.

Not expecting the loss of volume

Rebonded hair is straight, flat and heavy by design. People who wanted smooth-but-with-body are frequently unhappy with a result that was technically executed correctly.

Treating the first days as normal days

Clipping, tying, tucking behind ears or sleeping on it carelessly in the settling period can leave permanent kinks in the treated length. The instructions given for those days are not optional.

Ignoring scalp burning during processing

The chemistry is strong. Burning, stinging or soreness is a reason to stop and rinse immediately, not to wait for the timer.

Choosing on price alone

Session length, product quality and operator skill are what you are buying, and this is the service where operator skill has the largest consequences. An unusually cheap quote is a risk, not a saving.

Proceeding while hair is actively shedding or breaking

Unexplained shedding, patchy loss, scalp pain or snapping hair are reasons to see a doctor before any chemical service, not reasons to smooth the appearance of the problem.

Assuming it can be reversed if you dislike it

It cannot. The treated length stays as it is until it is cut off. This is the one service on the menu where changing your mind is not an option.

A chemical straightening treatment that alters the structure of the treated hair fibre. A reducing cream opens a large proportion of the disulphide bonds holding your curl pattern, the hair is straightened under tension and heat, and an oxidising neutraliser refixes those bonds in the new straight configuration.

In two chemical stages with a mechanical one between them. Reduction opens the bonds, straightening and ironing set the new shape, and neutralisation locks it. This is the same principle as a permanent wave, applied to straighten rather than to curl.

On the treated length, effectively yes — it does not fade or wash out and cannot be reversed. But it is permanent only for the hair that existed on the day. Everything that grows afterwards arrives in your natural texture.

No. The treatment acts on the hair fibre, not the follicle, so new growth is exactly as it always was. A visible border between natural roots and treated lengths usually appears within two to three months.

On the treated hair, until it is cut off. Practically, most people find the root contrast becomes noticeable at two to three months and book a root touch-up around four to six months, depending on growth rate and curl pattern.

Results, regrowth and longevity

Your natural texture emerges at the root while the treated length stays straight, creating a border that becomes more visible over time. Managing this — with touch-ups, styling or gradually cutting the treated hair off — is a permanent part of having had rebonding done.

Three options: a root-only touch-up every four to six months, styling to blend the transition, or growing it out and trimming the treated length away over time. Discuss which you intend before the first appointment, not after.

Generally every four to six months, applied strictly to new growth. More frequent touch-ups mean more chances to overlap onto treated hair, which is the main cause of serious damage.

Not the treated hair. The bonds have been refixed and no product, treatment or amount of time restores the original pattern. Your natural texture returns only as new hair grows in.

Yes, and this is the most common adverse outcome. The two usual causes are over-processing during the softening stage and overlap onto previously treated hair at a touch-up. Both are preventable and neither is reversible.

Applying reducing chemistry to hair that has already been rebonded, usually during a root touch-up. Previously treated hair has less structure remaining, so a second full exposure often causes it to snap — typically in a uniform line at that height.

It does not cause loss from the follicle. It can cause breakage along the shaft, which looks like thinning but has a different cause and a better outlook. Shedding from the root needs a diagnosis rather than a cosmetic explanation.

Yes. The softening cream is alkaline, and on a scratched, freshly shampooed or inflamed scalp it can cause genuine chemical burns. Burning during processing is a reason to rinse immediately, not to finish the timer.

Say so at once and ask them to rinse. Do not wait for the timer. If burning, blistering or a persistent rash develops afterwards, see a doctor and take the product name with you.

On the same length of hair, no — that is overlap. On new growth, yes, every four to six months with careful root isolation. The distinction is the single most important safety point on this page.

This is the clearest exclusion here. Bleaching has already broken a substantial share of the disulphide network, and rebonding asks that depleted structure to be opened and refixed again. Many salons will decline, and declining is the right call.

Often yes, with caution, a strand test and services spaced apart. Expect some tonal shift — both the alkaline softening and the oxidising neutraliser lift colour.

Who it suits, and who should not

Yes — curly hair is the classic candidate and gets the most dramatic result. It is also where root contrast becomes visible fastest, so the maintenance conversation matters more.

Yes, though it is often more change than a wavy-haired client actually wants. Consider whether a smoothening, cysteine or keratin service would give you enough, since those fade rather than growing out.

With caution. Fine hair processes quickly, over-softens easily and shows breakage soonest. Shorter processing, lower heat and an experienced operator are essential — or a gentler treatment instead.

This is the profile that tolerates rebonding best and benefits most in manageability. Expect the longest appointment and the highest price.

Then rebonding is not currently an option. Low elasticity is the single clearest signal to stop, and it is invisible without testing — which is exactly why the elasticity check exists.

Not over the previously treated length. Wait for meaningful regrowth, disclose the full history with dates, and expect root-only application with careful protection of the older hair.

Not under eighteen, in our view. This is the most intensive chemical service in the category, it is irreversible, and it commits the person to indefinite maintenance decisions.

No. It has no effect on the follicle, and by removing volume it can make existing thinning more visible. Active shedding needs a diagnosis, not a straightening service.

Commonly observed ranges run from around four thousand rupees at basic salons to fifteen thousand or more at premium ones for a full-length first service. Root touch-ups usually cost less. Treat any figure here as illustrative orientation, not a quotation.

Chair time is the main driver — four to eight hours of a skilled stylist's day — along with product tier, hair length and density. A quote far below the local range usually means less time, and time is what protects your hair here.

Not for about 72 hours. The refixed bonds are still stabilising, and washing too early can compromise both the result and the hair. Follow the exact interval you were given.

Compared with other treatments

Usually the same chemistry at different intensities. Smoothening processes more gently for a soft natural straightness; rebonding processes fully for pin-straight hair. Both use a neutraliser and both leave a regrowth line.

Rebonding, by a wide margin. Keratin deposits a coating and seals it with heat — temporary, no regrowth line. Rebonding alters the bonds themselves and does not wash out.

Neither universally. Nanoplastia is an acid-based coating lasting three to five months that fades evenly. Rebonding is a permanent structural change with a regrowth line. Choose by whether you want your hair changed or coated.

They are barely comparable. Hair botox is a conditioning treatment with no bond action and minimal straightening. Rebonding is the most intensive structural change available. One improves how hair looks; the other changes what it is.

Cysteine uses a much weaker reducing agent with no full fixing step, so the result is mild and fades in six to ten weeks. Rebonding uses strong reduction with oxidative refixing and does not fade at all.

Closely related and often confused. Both permanently alter treated hair. Japanese straightening typically involves a more intensive thermal reconditioning stage and is the strongest and least forgiving option of the two.

Relaxers most often use hydroxide chemistry, which breaks bonds by a different and irreversible route with no neutralising refix in the same sense. Both are permanent on treated hair; the chemistries and their risk profiles differ.

Whichever achieves your goal with the least structural intervention. If a coating treatment gives you the result you want, it is the safer choice by definition. Rebonding is the right answer only when nothing gentler will do.
