The short answer
What nanoplastia actually is
Nanoplastia is a trade name, not a technique with a legal definition. In practice it describes a semi-permanent hair smoothing service in which an acid-based formulation — most commonly built around glyoxylic acid, together with hydrolysed proteins, amino acids, humectants and conditioning agents — is combed through the hair, left to process, then sealed with repeated passes of a hot flat iron. The acid softens and reorganises the hydrogen and salt bridges inside the hair and lifts the cuticle enough for the actives to sit down; the heat is what physically reshapes and locks the strand. Because disulphide bonds are not broken, the change is not permanent: it fades over roughly three to five months rather than growing out with a hard demarcation line.
The single most important thing to understand: nanoplastia is a marketing category, so two services with the same name can contain entirely different chemistry. Judge the product in front of you by its INCI list, not by the word on the price board.

Nanoplastia is marketed on two claims — that it is formaldehyde-free and that it works at a nano scale. Both deserve a closer look than the salon brochure gives them.

None of these claims are illegal, and most of the salons repeating them believe them. They are, however, either unverifiable or incomplete — and the gap between them and the ingredient list is where clients get hurt.

Claim
“It uses nanotechnology to enter the hair at a molecular level.”
Verified position
“Nano” here is brand language, not a specification. No standard defines a particle size for a product sold as nanoplastia, no disclosure of engineered nanoparticles is required, and there is no published evidence that a nanoplastia formulation penetrates differently from a conventional acid smoothing formula. Small molecules — amino acids, glyoxylic acid — do diffuse into the cortex, but that has been true of hair chemistry for decades.

Claim
“Nanoplastia is formaldehyde-free, so it is safe.”
Verified position
Two separate problems. First, the name does not guarantee the absence of formaldehyde — because the category is unregulated, products marketed as nanoplastia have been found to contain formaldehyde or releasers such as methylene glycol, DMDM hydantoin or imidazolidinyl urea, which liberate formaldehyde gas when the iron hits them. Second, even a genuinely formaldehyde-free product is not automatically safe: glyoxylic acid carries its own documented risk profile, including published case reports of acute kidney injury. Formaldehyde-free is a meaningful improvement in air quality. It is not a safety certificate.

Claim
“It repairs and rebuilds damaged hair from within.”
Verified position
Hair is not living tissue and cannot heal. What these formulas do is cosmetically fill and seal: hydrolysed proteins deposit into porous regions, humectants hold water, and the sealed cuticle reflects light more evenly, so hair feels and looks better. That is a genuine, worthwhile cosmetic effect. It is not repair, it is temporary, and it washes out. Hair that is already breaking will not be strengthened by adding acid and 200 °C of iron heat to it.

Claim
“Results last up to a year with no regrowth line.”
Verified position
The no-regrowth-line part is true and is a real advantage over rebonding — the effect fades rather than forming a hard border. The duration part is optimistic. Most people see meaningful smoothing for three to five months. Twelve months is not a typical result; it appears in marketing because a trace of improved shine can persist long after the texture change has gone. Water hardness, sulphate shampoo, chlorinated pools, sun and how coarse your natural curl is will each move that number.

Claim
“Suitable for all hair types, including pregnancy and children.”
Verified position
No. There is no adequate safety data for these acid systems in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the service is entirely elective — the standard dermatological answer is to defer it. Children should not have chemical smoothing at all. Severely damaged, recently relaxed or rebonded hair, an inflamed or broken scalp, known kidney disease and known allergy to the formulation are all reasons to decline or postpone. “Suitable for everyone” is the single clearest sign that nobody is assessing you.
How to use this section: take the five verified positions to your consultation and ask the salon to respond to each one about the specific product they will use on you. A practitioner who welcomes that conversation is the one you want. A practitioner who is offended by it has told you something useful.

The cuticle decides how your hair behaves
The outer layer is a stack of overlapping keratin scales. When they lie flat, light reflects evenly and neighbouring strands slide past each other — that reads as shine and smoothness. When they are lifted by porosity, alkaline products, mechanical wear or humidity, strands catch on each other and you get frizz. Almost everything nanoplastia delivers cosmetically comes from getting these scales to lie flat and stay flat.
Beneath the cuticle, keratin proteins are packed into bundles held by several kinds of bond. The asymmetry of this packing is why your hair is straight, wavy or coiled — texture is built here, not on the surface. Acid smoothing systems act mostly on the weaker bonds within this structure and on the water it holds. That is why they can loosen a curl pattern but cannot abolish it.

Which bonds move, and which do not
Hair holds its shape through hydrogen bonds, salt bridges and disulphide bonds. Water and heat alone can temporarily disrupt the first two — that is how a blow-dry works. An acid system disrupts and re-sets them more durably. Disulphide bonds are the strong, permanent ones, and acid smoothing is not designed to break them. This is the single line that separates nanoplastia from rebonding: a treatment that leaves disulphide bonds intact fades out, while one that breaks them changes the hair permanently and leaves a regrowth border.

Diffusion, not nanotechnology
Small molecules move into hair because hair is porous and the formulation is designed to swell it slightly. Glyoxylic acid, amino acids and low-molecular-weight hydrolysed proteins are small enough to enter; large silicones and film-formers stay on the surface. Porous, previously bleached hair takes them in faster and unevenly, which is exactly why high-porosity hair over-processes and colour shifts. There is no verified nanoparticle mechanism at work here — just concentration, pH, time and porosity.

The iron is the active step — and the risky one
Heat drives off water, sets the new bond arrangement and presses the cuticle flat. It is what converts a conditioning treatment into a smoothing treatment. It is also where damage happens: with an acid-softened strand under the plates, excessive temperature or too many passes causes cumulative protein damage and breakage that no product reverses. A practitioner who matches plate temperature to your hair's condition instead of defaulting to maximum is doing the most important thing in the entire service.

The workhorse of most modern nanoplastia systems and the reason they can be marketed as formaldehyde-free. It is an aldehyde-acid that reorganises weak bonds in the hair so the flat iron can set a smoother shape. It genuinely works, and swapping it in for formaldehyde removes a recognised carcinogen from the air of the salon.
Why it needs care
Published case reports and case series describe acute kidney injury after hair-straightening procedures using glyoxylic-acid products. A murine study showed that glyoxylic acid applied to skin is absorbed, metabolised to oxalate, and can cause calcium oxalate deposition in the kidney. These events appear uncommon relative to how widely the products are used, but the mechanism is now well described.
What reduces exposure
Keeping product off the scalp and skin, avoiding scalp massage during application, thorough rinsing, not repeating the service frequently, and declining it entirely if you have kidney disease.
Warning symptoms after a service
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal or flank pain, reduced urine output, or unusual fatigue in the days after treatment warrant prompt medical assessment, mentioning the hair product specifically.
Formaldehyde is classified as a human carcinogen and is a respiratory and skin irritant. Releasers are the more common problem in practice: they are not formaldehyde on the shelf, but they liberate formaldehyde gas when the flat iron heats them, which is precisely when your face is closest to the strand.
Regulatory position
The US FDA has had a proposed rule to ban formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in hair smoothing and straightening products on its agenda since 2023, and has repeatedly deferred publication — as of early 2026 no such rule was in force. In other words, a product being available for sale tells you nothing about whether it is safe to inhale.
What it feels like in the room
Stinging eyes, a burning throat, coughing or a sharp chemical smell during the ironing stage. That is a reason to stop the service and rinse, not something to tolerate.
Occupational note
The person with the highest cumulative exposure is the stylist, who does this several times a week. A salon that has moved to genuinely formaldehyde-free systems is protecting its own staff too.
Appears in some smoothing systems, either as the primary acid or alongside glyoxylic acid, and is otherwise a very familiar cosmetic ingredient in skincare. In the murine work on straightening creams, glycolic acid raised urinary oxalate far less than glyoxylic acid did, and the human case reports point primarily at glyoxylic acid — but the metabolic pathways are linked, so a formula built on glycolic acid is not a free pass either.
Practical read
Treat any acid-plus-heat system the same way: off the scalp, well rinsed, well ventilated, not repeated frequently, and not at all if you have kidney disease.
These are the “filling” part of the formula. Low-molecular-weight fragments can enter porous regions of the cortex and temporarily improve tensile behaviour and feel; larger fragments form a film on the surface. They contribute a real, measurable improvement in how hair handles — and they wash out, which is why maintenance products matter more than people expect.
Note on protein overload
Layering heavy protein products on top of a protein-rich service can leave hair stiff and brittle-feeling. Balance protein with moisture in your aftercare rather than stacking one on the other.
Allergy note
Hydrolysed wheat protein has been associated with allergic reactions in a small number of people. Declare any known cosmetic allergies before the service.
Humectants hold water in the strand; film-formers and conditioning silicones lay down a smooth, low-friction surface. A good part of the immediate glassy finish after nanoplastia comes from this layer rather than from structural change — which is not a criticism, it is simply useful to know when you are deciding how long the “result” should be expected to last.
Humidity caveat
In very humid coastal air, high-glycerin products can pull moisture in and slightly soften the smoothing effect. In Mumbai's monsoon this is a real, if modest, factor.
If you see these on the label, you are not being given an acid smoothing treatment. Thioglycolates and hydroxides break disulphide bonds — that is chemical relaxing, rebonding or Japanese straightening. The result is permanent, it produces a regrowth line, and the damage profile and aftercare are different.
Why this matters commercially
A service sold as nanoplastia at a suspiciously low price, delivered with a hydroxide relaxer, is a substitution you should be able to detect from the ingredient list alone.
Never combine
Stacking a relaxer and an acid smoothing service — in either order, in a short window — is where the worst breakage cases come from.
Tannin-based systems are a legitimate adjacent category and are usually gentler in effect, with correspondingly milder and shorter-lived results. The problem is linguistic: “organic”, “natural” and “botanical” are unregulated in this context, and several products marketed this way have been found to contain aldehyde chemistry.
The rule that always holds
The word on the label is marketing. The INCI list is the product. Ask for the list.
One question that settles most of this: “Can I see the full ingredient list and the safety data sheet for the product you'll use on me?” A professional salon has both on hand. If the answer is a brand story instead of a document, you have your answer.

This is the section most nanoplastia pages omit. It is here because you cannot consent to something you have not been told about — and because the risks below are largely manageable once you know they exist.
Kidney injury from glyoxylic acid
Case reports and case series in the nephrology literature describe otherwise healthy people developing acute kidney injury shortly after a hair-straightening procedure, with oxalate crystals identified as the cause. A controlled mouse study then reproduced it: glyoxylic acid applied to skin was absorbed, converted to oxalate, and produced calcium oxalate nephropathy — while glycolic acid had a much weaker effect. Commentators have called for regulatory review and clinician awareness rather than panic, noting there has been no epidemic despite widespread use, which suggests exposure and individual metabolism both matter.
Uncommon but documentedAvoid entirely with kidney disease
Inhaled formaldehyde during the iron stage
Formaldehyde is a recognised human carcinogen and an airway irritant, and releasers such as methylene glycol liberate it when heated. This is the risk that genuinely formaldehyde-free nanoplastia removes — which is the strongest argument in the treatment's favour. It only holds if the product truly is free of releasers, and the only way to establish that is the ingredient list plus the safety data sheet.

Breakage — the most likely thing to go wrong
Statistically, the complication you are most likely to actually experience is not systemic at all: it is mid-shaft breakage from acid softening combined with repeated high-heat passes on hair that was already compromised by bleach, colour, relaxer or previous smoothing. It shows up as short broken ends, a cotton-wool feel when wet, and loss of elasticity. It cannot be reversed, only grown out.

Scalp and skin reactions
Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis can follow any of these formulations, especially if product reaches an already-inflamed scalp. Burning during application is not a sign the treatment is working — it is a reason to rinse. If you have seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, folliculitis or any broken skin, treat the scalp first and defer the cosmetic service.

Shedding versus breakage
Nanoplastia does not act on the follicle, so it does not cause pattern hair loss. What it can do is provoke a scalp reaction, and a significant inflammatory or irritant insult can be followed by temporary diffuse shedding. Snapped hairs are also frequently mistaken for hair fall. If your hair is suddenly coming out from the root in quantity after a chemical service, that deserves an examination rather than reassurance.

How to lower your own exposure
Insist the product is kept off your scalp and hairline. Decline scalp massage during the service. Ask for the room to be ventilated and for extraction if available. Ask for the lowest iron temperature that will do the job on your hair. Rinse thoroughly. Space repeat services by months, not weeks. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney disease, or are under eighteen, do not have this treatment.
All of this is reasonable to ask
Proportion matters: millions of these services are performed and serious systemic events remain rare in the literature. The point of this section is not to frighten you out of a cosmetic treatment — it is that the handful of precautions above cost nothing, and the people who get hurt are almost always the ones who were never offered them.

Scalp and hair assessment
Scalp checked for dermatitis, flaking, folliculitis, scratches or recent chemical processing. Porosity and elasticity assessed, and your full chemical history recorded — including any relaxing, rebonding, bleaching or henna.
Safeguard: an inflamed or broken scalp means the appointment is postponed, not worked around.
Stage 2 · 15–20 minutes
Ingredient disclosure and strand test
The exact product is named, the INCI list and safety data sheet are shown, and a discreet section at the back of the head is processed first to check for colour shift, elasticity loss and breakage.
Safeguard: on coloured, bleached or previously smoothed hair, a strand test is not optional.

A clarifying shampoo lifts silicone, mineral and styling residue so the formulation distributes evenly. Uneven distribution is a common cause of patchy results.

Product applied in fine sections from mid-shaft to ends, deliberately kept a clear margin away from the scalp and hairline.

The formulation sits for the manufacturer's specified time. The room should have real airflow — an open window and a fan at minimum, local extraction ideally.
Safeguard: stinging eyes, throat burn or coughing means stop and rinse. That symptom is information, not an inconvenience.
Stage 6 · 40–80 minutes
Blow-dry and thermal sealing
Hair is dried completely, then passed through a calibrated flat iron in thin sections for the specified number of passes. This is the step that creates the result.
Safeguard: temperature matched to hair condition — fine, coloured or fragile hair takes a lower setting, not the same 230 °C as everyone else.
Stage 7 · 15–25 minutes
Rinse, seal and finish
Depending on the system, hair is rinsed and finished with a pH-balanced conditioner or mask, then dried without tension.
Safeguard: thorough rinsing removes residual acid from hair and skin — do not let this stage be rushed.
Stage 8 · 10 minutes
Written aftercare briefing
You leave knowing when you may wash, which shampoo to use, what heat discipline to keep, the expected longevity for your hair, and which symptoms warrant medical review.
Safeguard: get it in writing, including the product name — useful if you ever need to show a doctor.
Ventilation, a visible temperature reading and a legible ingredient panel are the three details that most reliably separate a careful salon from a fast one.

Two to four hours for most people; longer for long, dense or tightly curled hair, because the sealing stage is done in thin sections and cannot be rushed without cost. A salon promising a ninety-minute nanoplastia on waist-length curly hair is skipping something.

The commonest disappointment is not a bad treatment — it is a mismatch between what was promised and what the chemistry can do. If your goal is poker-straight hair and your hair is tightly coiled, no acid smoothing system will get you there, and pushing for it with extra heat is how hair gets destroyed.
Nanoplastia also has no effect on new growth. Roots emerge with your natural texture from day one, and the transition is gradual rather than a visible line — which most people find easier to live with than a rebonding demarcation.

Mirror-level shine
A flattened cuticle reflects light in one direction instead of scattering it. This is the most immediate and most reliable effect.

The practical headline for Indian coastal cities. Sealed hair takes up less atmospheric moisture, so it stays down in monsoon air — not perfectly, but transformatively.
Twenty minutes back every morning
Most people report drying and styling time dropping substantially. Less daily blow-drying is itself a reduction in cumulative heat damage.
Movement, not board-straightness
Because disulphide bonds stay intact, hair keeps some natural bend and swing. Many clients prefer this finish to the flatness of rebonding.
No regrowth demarcation
The effect fades rather than forming a hard border between treated and untreated hair, so the grow-out phase is far more forgiving.
Less tangling, less mechanical breakage
A smoother surface means less combing friction. Over months, reduced daily mechanical stress is a genuine benefit to hair condition.

If you dislike the result, it fades in a few months. That is a materially different risk profile from a permanent bond-breaking service.

Proteins are in the formula, but the mechanism is acid plus sustained flat-iron heat. The heat step is where damage occurs, and no amount of protein in the bottle changes that a 230 °C plate on fragile hair breaks it.
✕ “Formaldehyde-free means chemical-free.”
Everything is a chemical, including water. Formaldehyde-free means one specific carcinogen has been removed — usually replaced with glyoxylic acid, which is potent chemistry with its own precautions.

No. Burning, stinging or streaming eyes are signals to stop and rinse. A correctly applied service kept off the scalp should not hurt at all.

Hair is not living tissue and cannot regenerate. Cosmetic filling and sealing improves how damaged hair looks and feels, temporarily. Adding acid and heat to already-damaged hair generally makes the underlying problem worse, not better.

The treatment does not act on follicles. What people usually see is breakage mistaken for shedding — though a genuine scalp reaction can be followed by temporary diffuse shedding, which deserves examination rather than reassurance.
✕ “You can do it at home from a kit.”
The risky variables are precisely the ones a home setting handles worst: ventilation, keeping product off the scalp, plate temperature control and even sectioning. This is the wrong service to learn on your own head.
✕ “It's just like hair botox.”
Hair botox is essentially a deep conditioning and filling service with little structural reshaping. Nanoplastia uses reactive acid chemistry set with heat. Different mechanism, different longevity, different risk profile. Neither contains botulinum toxin.
✕ “More frequent sessions keep hair healthier.”
The opposite. Each session is another round of acid softening and thermal stress. Most protocols cap it at two to three times a year with months between, and topping up as soon as the effect fades is a reliable route to cumulative damage.
Any single one of these is a reason to reschedule. Two or more, and the price is not the problem.

Longevity is mostly decided after you leave the chair. These are the variables you control, in order of how much difference they make.
1. Drop sulphates entirely
The single highest-impact change. Sodium lauryl and laureth sulphate strip the smoothing effect faster than anything else you do. Also avoid shampoos with added sodium chloride, which accelerates fade.
2. Respect the first wash window
Follow the specific product's instruction — systems range from wash-immediately to wait 72 hours. Within that window, avoid tying, clipping, headbands and sweat where you can.
3. Wash less, and cooler
Every wash costs you a little hold. Two to three washes a week with lukewarm rather than hot water measurably extends the result, and helps hair colour too.
4. Filter hard water if you can
Mineral-heavy water deposits on the cuticle and dulls the finish. An inline shower filter is a small, unglamorous purchase with a visible effect in most Indian cities.
5. Keep using heat protectant
Smoothed hair still needs thermal protection. It has already absorbed a significant heat load during the service, and the cumulative total is what causes breakage.
6. Chlorine and salt water
Both shorten the result. Wet hair with clean water before swimming, wear a cap if you swim regularly, and rinse immediately afterwards.
7. Weekly moisture mask
Balance the protein-rich service with hydration rather than stacking more protein on top. Protein overload after smoothing leaves hair stiff and prone to snapping.
8. Space the next one out
Wait for genuine fade, not the first hint of frizz. Two to three services a year with several months between is the sustainable ceiling for most hair.
When to seek medical review
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal or flank pain, reduced urine output, unusual fatigue, a persistent scalp rash, or sudden diffuse shedding in the days after treatment. Mention the hair product and bring the product name with you.

You are also losing hair, and want to know what is texture and what is a diagnosis

Otherwise, the most valuable thing anyone can give you is the ingredient list and an honest answer about what your hair will actually do.

“Patients rarely arrive asking whether nanoplastia is safe. They arrive asking why their hair snapped three weeks after a service that was sold to them as damage-free.”
My clinical position on this treatment is straightforward. Acid smoothing systems are a real improvement over the formaldehyde keratin services many of my patients had in the 2010s, and the reduction in inhaled formaldehyde matters for stylists most of all. I have no objection to a well-chosen cosmetic service on healthy hair.
What I do object to is the vocabulary. “Nano” implies a technology nobody has documented. “Formaldehyde-free” is often true and often unverified, and it has been allowed to stand in for “safe”, which is a different claim entirely. Meanwhile the nephrology literature has been accumulating case reports of acute kidney injury after glyoxylic-acid straightening, with a plausible mechanism now demonstrated in animals. Those events look uncommon set against how many services are performed — but the patients in those reports were healthy young women who had no idea a hair treatment could reach their kidneys.
So my advice is unglamorous. Ask for the ingredient list. Insist the product stays off your scalp. Sit in a ventilated room. Take a strand test seriously if your hair is coloured or bleached. Do not have it while pregnant or breastfeeding, and do not have it at all if your kidneys are not well. And if your goal is poker-straight coily hair, tell the person holding the iron, because that goal cannot be met by this chemistry and pursuing it with heat is how hair is lost.
None of that is a reason to avoid nanoplastia. It is a reason to have it done by someone who is willing to discuss all of it with you first.

These are the errors that turn up most often in clinic after a salon smoothing or straightening service — some cost you the result, and some cost you the hair. None of them require expertise to avoid, only knowing to ask.

Reading “formaldehyde-free” as “fume-free”
The claim addresses one named ingredient. It does not by itself tell you what is released when the formula meets a flat iron at working temperature, and that is the exposure that matters in the chair.

Taking “nano” as a description of the mechanism
The prefix carries scientific weight in the ear without necessarily carrying it in the formula. Ask what evidence supports the particle-size claim, and notice how often the answer is a brochure.

Expecting a permanent change to curl pattern
This is a coating and sealing service. It manages frizz and improves surface behaviour. Hair that grows in afterwards has the texture it always had.

Assuming it is gentler than a reduction service in every respect
It avoids the bond-breaking chemistry, which is a real advantage. It still involves an acid formula and sustained high heat, which is a real exposure. Both things are true at once.

Skipping ventilation questions because of the marketing
The heat stage is the exposure stage regardless of what the front of the bottle says. A well-ventilated room is a reasonable thing to expect and a reasonable thing to ask about.

Booking it onto freshly bleached hair
Sustained high heat on hair that has already lost structure is where breakage begins, whatever the formula. Sequencing and spacing are the professional questions here.

Judging longevity from the salon mirror
The result fades gradually rather than ending. The realistic assessment point is several washes in, not on the day.

Nanoplastia is a marketing name for an acid-based hair smoothing service. A formulation — usually built around glyoxylic acid or a similar acid system, plus hydrolysed proteins, amino acids and conditioning agents — is applied to the hair and then sealed with a flat iron. The heat step is what reshapes and locks the hair; the chemistry makes the cuticle receptive to it.
Not in any regulated or verifiable sense. “Nano” here is brand language. There is no requirement that a product called nanoplastia contains engineered nanoparticles, and no standard defines what particle size a nanoplastia formula must have.
No. It works on hydrogen bonds and salt bridges rather than disulphide bonds, so the effect fades over months instead of altering the hair permanently.

It follows the Brazilian naming convention that produced “botox capilar” and “tanninoplastia” — a category name coined for the salon market rather than defined by a standards body. That is precisely why the ingredient list matters more than the name.
Roughly two to four hours for most people. Long, dense or very curly hair takes longer because the flat-iron sealing stage is done in fine sections.
It should not. Correctly applied, the product stays off your scalp and you feel nothing beyond the warmth of the iron. Burning, stinging or watering eyes means stop and rinse.

Chemistry and safety

Not automatically. Many nanoplastia systems replace formaldehyde with glyoxylic acid and are genuinely formaldehyde-free, but the word nanoplastia is not regulated and some products marketed under it still contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents such as methylene glycol, DMDM hydantoin or imidazolidinyl urea. The only way to know is to read the full INCI list and safety data sheet of the specific product being used on you.
It can be safer with respect to inhaled formaldehyde if the product is genuinely formaldehyde-free, which is a real advantage for both client and stylist. It is not risk-free: glyoxylic acid carries its own documented concerns, including case reports of acute kidney injury from oxalate nephropathy after scalp application. Safer in one dimension is not the same as safe.
Published case reports and case series describe acute kidney injury after hair-straightening procedures using glyoxylic acid products, with a mouse study demonstrating that glyoxylic acid absorbed through skin is metabolised to oxalate and can cause calcium oxalate nephropathy. These are uncommon events relative to how widely the products are used, but they are documented. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or reduced urine output after a smoothing service warrants prompt medical review.
An aldehyde-acid used to reorganise the weaker bonds inside hair so heat can set a smoother shape. It replaced formaldehyde in most modern smoothing systems, which genuinely improved salon air quality. It can also be absorbed through skin and converted in the body to oxalate, which is the basis of the kidney concern.
Formaldehyde, formalin, methylene glycol, methanediol, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15 and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. All of these either are formaldehyde or release it when heated.
The US FDA has had a proposed rule on its agenda since 2023 and repeatedly deferred publishing it; as of early 2026 no such rule was in force. Regulatory status differs by country and changes over time, so check current local rules — and in any case, availability for sale is not evidence of safety.
A mild odour is common. What is not acceptable is a sharp chemical smell with stinging eyes, throat irritation or coughing during the ironing stage — that pattern suggests formaldehyde release and is a reason to stop, rinse and ventilate.
Any service that combines chemistry with repeated high-heat passes carries damage potential. Well-executed on healthy hair it can leave hair smoother and easier to manage. Badly executed — no strand test, excessive heat, applied to already-fragile hair — it causes breakage that no product reverses.
It does not target the follicle, so it does not cause pattern hair loss. It can cause breakage that looks like hair loss, and a chemical or irritant scalp reaction can trigger temporary shedding. Sudden diffuse shedding after any chemical service should be assessed rather than assumed to be normal.
Yes — irritant and allergic contact dermatitis are both possible, and hydrolysed wheat protein in particular has been linked to allergic reactions in a small number of people. If you react easily to cosmetics, ask for a patch test 48 hours before the service.
This is the exposure that gets ignored. A client has one service every few months; a stylist may perform several a week for years. Genuinely formaldehyde-free products, gloves, and real ventilation or extraction are occupational health measures, not client comforts.
It should never reach the scalp in quantity. Where it does — through poor technique, or through scratches and micro-abrasions from vigorous shampooing — irritation is more likely and so is absorption. This is why a gentle pre-wash and a clear application margin matter.
III
Who it suits, and who should not have it

Anyone with an inflamed, broken or infected scalp, active seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriasis on the scalp, known allergy to the formulation, severely damaged hair with poor elasticity, recent chemical relaxing or rebonding, existing kidney disease, or who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Children should not have it. Asthma or airway reactivity is an added reason to insist on a genuinely formaldehyde-free product and good ventilation.
There is no adequate safety data for these acid systems in pregnancy or lactation, and the treatment is entirely cosmetic. The usual dermatological advice is to defer non-essential chemical services with volatile or absorbable components until after pregnancy and breastfeeding, and to discuss it with your own obstetrician.
Sometimes, but it needs a strand test first. Acid systems plus flat-iron heat on already-compromised bonds is where most breakage happens. Bleached, highlighted or repeatedly coloured hair should be assessed for elasticity, and colour shift after the service is common.
It reduces frizz and loosens curl but generally will not deliver poker-straight results on tightly coiled hair, and expecting that leads to over-processing. If your goal is frizz control and manageability rather than straightness, it can work well.
No. Chemical smoothing is not appropriate for anyone under eighteen. There is no safety data in this group, the exposure is elective, and the social pressure driving these requests deserves a conversation rather than a service.

The conservative answer is no. Given the documented oxalate pathway and the fact that this is a purely cosmetic service, there is no favourable risk-benefit calculation for someone with reduced kidney function or a history of oxalate stones. Discuss it with your nephrologist before considering it.
Yes — the chemistry is not sex-specific and it is used for frizz control on medium and longer hair. On very short hair there is little to smooth and the service adds little value.
Fine hair can be treated but needs lower iron temperatures and fewer passes, because there is less strand to absorb the thermal load. Genuinely thinning hair is a separate issue: smoothing makes hair lie flatter, which can make thinning look more obvious, and any active shedding should be assessed first.
Layering an acid smoothing service onto recently rebonded or relaxed hair is one of the highest-risk combinations for breakage. Wait for substantial regrowth, get elasticity assessed, and treat a strand test as mandatory rather than optional.

Results and longevity

Commonly around three to five months, with a wide individual spread. Longevity depends on hair porosity, natural curl pattern, how often you wash, water hardness, sulphate exposure, sun and swimming. Coarse resistant curl tends to revert sooner than mild frizz.
In rough order of impact: sulphate shampoos, frequent washing, hard water, hot water, chlorinated pools and sea water, strong sun, and heavy scalp oiling that requires aggressive cleansing to remove.
Follow the specific product's instruction, which ranges from immediately to seventy-two hours depending on the system. When you do wash, use a sulphate-free and preferably salt-free shampoo, because sulphates strip the treatment faster than anything else you control.
Within the initial window specified by the product, avoid tight ties, clips and headbands, which can leave a set kink. After that, normal styling is fine — but soft ties and loose styles reduce mechanical stress generally.
Some loss of volume is expected — smoothed hair lies closer to the head. Because disulphide bonds are untouched, most people keep some movement, which is why many prefer this finish to rebonding. If volume matters more than smoothness to you, say so before booking.
Most protocols suggest not more than two to three times a year, spaced by at least three to four months. Repeating it as soon as the effect fades is a common route to cumulative damage.
The treated length gradually returns towards its natural behaviour while new growth comes in with your own texture. There is no hard line, so the transition is soft — you notice frizz returning before you notice a border.
Yes, though curls may hold less well and drop faster on smoothed hair. Use heat protectant and the lowest effective temperature — the point of the treatment was to reduce your daily heat exposure, not shift it elsewhere.

Cost, logistics and combinations

Indicative market pricing typically runs from a few thousand rupees for short hair at a mid-tier salon to well over twenty thousand for long, dense hair at a premium studio. Price varies with hair length, density, product system, operator skill and city. Any figure quoted online is indicative only — get a written quote after an in-person assessment.

Stacking two chemical services in one sitting increases breakage risk. Most practitioners colour first and space the smoothing service afterwards, or wait two weeks between them. Get the sequence decided by whoever is assessing your hair, not by scheduling convenience.
Often slightly. Acid systems plus heat can shift tone, lighten colour a little or make it appear warmer, especially on fashion shades and bleached hair. This is one of the things a strand test tells you before it happens to your whole head.

If the issue is that hair is not straight enough, the answer is not another chemical service on top — that is how damage compounds. Wait for the treatment to fade. If the issue is breakage or a scalp reaction, that is a clinical matter: get it examined, and keep the product name.

The service structure is similar — apply, process, flat-iron — but the active chemistry differs. Traditional keratin systems often relied on formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasers to lock the shape; most nanoplastia systems use an acid such as glyoxylic acid instead. Results feel comparable to slightly stronger with nanoplastia in many hands, but the product-specific ingredient list matters more than the label.
Hair botox generally refers to a deep conditioning and filling treatment that smooths by adding proteins and lipids, with little or no structural reshaping. Nanoplastia uses acid chemistry plus heat to actually reduce texture. Neither involves botulinum toxin.
No. Rebonding and Japanese straightening break and re-form disulphide bonds, which is a permanent structural change with a visible regrowth line. Nanoplastia is a semi-permanent smoothing service that fades.
“Smoothening” in Indian salons covers a range of chemistries, some of them mild thio systems that partially break disulphide bonds and last longer. If reversibility matters to you, an acid system is the more conservative choice. Ask which chemistry is actually being used rather than choosing by name.
Tannin-based systems are usually gentler with milder, shorter-lived results. The words organic and natural are unregulated here, and some products marketed that way have been found to contain aldehyde chemistry, so the INCI list remains the only reliable check.
Cysteine systems are milder and generally shorter-lived, and they avoid both formaldehyde and glyoxylic acid — which is a reasonable trade if you want the gentlest option and accept a subtler result. Verify the label here too, because some products sold as cysteine treatments contain additional actives.
Sulphate-free cleansing, a good conditioner used consistently, a weekly moisture mask, a leave-in serum, air-drying where practical, heat protectant when not, a silk pillowcase and hard-water filtration. Undramatic, cumulative, and genuinely effective for mild to moderate frizz.
