Every other treatment in this aisle at least tells you something about its chemistry. “Smoothening” tells you nothing. In the same city, on the same afternoon, three salons using this word will be performing three fundamentally different services — one deposits a coating and seals it with heat, one mildly loosens your bonds, one alters them semi-permanently and leaves a regrowth line. The price will look similar. The consequences will not. This page shows you how to tell which one you are being offered, before you sit down.
The 30-second answer
Hair smoothening is a cosmetic salon service intended to reduce frizz and make hair smoother and easier to manage. Unlike keratin, nanoplastia or cysteine — each of which names a specific chemistry — smoothening is a commercial category name with no agreed definition. In Indian salons it most often refers to a thioglycolate-based service performed more gently than rebonding, giving a soft natural straightness rather than a poker-straight finish. But the same word is also used for coating treatments sealed with heat and for milder amino-acid systems. Results, longevity and permanence therefore depend far more on which system your salon uses than on the word itself.

The four systems
These are not variations on a theme. They differ in what they do to your hair, how long it lasts, whether it grows out in a line, and what happens if you ever want it undone.
Why this matters more than anything else on the page. Systems A and B wash out. System C does not — it changes your hair until you cut it off. A client who thought she was buying a temporary treatment and finds a hard line two centimetres from her scalp four months later has not been harmed by bad chemistry. She has been harmed by a word that covers four things at once.

Hair science
Select a stage to see which part of the hair it acts on. The diagram is a schematic cross-section drawn to explain mechanism — it is not a micrograph, and it is not a picture of your hair.
The outer layer is a stack of overlapping keratin scales. When they lie flat, light reflects evenly and neighbouring strands slide past each other — that reads as shine and smoothness. When they are lifted by porosity, alkaline products, mechanical wear or humidity, strands catch on each other and you get frizz. Much of what a smoothening treatment delivers cosmetically comes from getting these scales to lie flat and stay flat.
Beneath the cuticle, keratin proteins are packed into bundles held by several kinds of bond. The asymmetry of this packing is why your hair is straight, wavy or coiled — texture is built here, not on the surface. Acid smoothing systems act mostly on the weaker bonds within this structure and on the water it holds. That is why they can loosen a curl pattern but cannot abolish it.
Your curl pattern is held largely by disulphide bonds — sulphur-to-sulphur links between cysteine residues in the keratin of the cortex. The reducing systems open a proportion of them so the fibre can be reshaped. How large that proportion is depends on which agent is used: thioglycolate opens many, cysteine comparatively few. A coating system opens none at all and works entirely on the surface.
With bonds open, the fibre becomes pliable and is pulled into a straighter alignment — by tension from a comb or board in a thioglycolate service, and by the flat iron in all of them. Heat drives off water while the hair holds its new position. Conditioning agents, proteins and film-formers ride along, improving feel and gloss regardless of which system is being used.
This is the fork that decides everything. A thioglycolate service applies a neutraliser — an oxidising lotion that permanently reconnects the bonds in their new positions. That is what makes the result semi-permanent and what creates the regrowth line. A coating or mild-thiol service skips this entirely, so bonds gradually re-establish and the effect fades evenly over weeks.
Formulation
The first three families are the actives — and which one appears in your product decides which of the four services you are actually having. The rest decide how it feels, smells and holds. Open each to see what it does and what to ask.
Ammonium thioglycolate, sodium thioglycolate or thiolactic acid. This is the reference reducing agent in hair chemistry: it opens disulphide bonds efficiently, and when followed by an oxidising neutraliser it refixes them in the new shape. That two-stage process is what rebonding is, and a gentler version of it is what most Indian salons mean by smoothening.
If this is in your product, the result is semi-permanent. Your hair will not return to its previous pattern; it will grow out with a visible border. That may be exactly what you want — but it is a different purchase from a treatment that washes away, and it is the single most important thing the word “smoothening” fails to tell you. The presence of a neutralising step is the giveaway.
L-cysteine, cysteine hydrochloride or cysteamine. Chemically the same family as thioglycolate but considerably weaker, with far less odour, and typically used without a full neutralising step. The result is a partial loosening that fades over six to ten weeks with no regrowth line.

Formaldehyde, methylene glycol, glyoxylic acid and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives such as DMDM hydantoin. These cross-link keratin during the ironing stage, which is why they work so well and why the category has a regulatory history. Regulators have repeatedly found formaldehyde in products labelled formaldehyde-free.
The practical test is not the label on the front but the panel on the back, and the air in the room. Eyes watering or a throat burning during ironing is a clinical sign, not an inconvenience.

Hydrolysed keratin, wheat or silk protein, amino-acid complexes, behentrimonium and cetrimonium chloride, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine and fatty alcohols. These deposit into porous areas and flatten the cuticle, improving feel, gloss and comb-through. They are present in all four systems and they are not what makes your hair straighter in any of them.

Glycerin, panthenol, sodium PCA and propylene glycol hold water in the fibre and keep the finish supple rather than merely smooth. In Mumbai’s monsoon they can also draw in more atmospheric water than you want, which is one reason the same treatment behaves differently in June and in January.

Amodimethicone, dimethicone, polyquaterniums, argan and macadamia oils, shea butter and ceramide systems. These give the gloss and the humidity resistance, and they buffer the fibre against the iron. Note the tension with the “natural” framing: a formula built on an amino acid is still, sensibly, carrying a good deal of synthetic conditioning chemistry.

Fragrance is heavily used here, because thiol chemistry has a characteristic sulphurous smell even in its mildest form. That means a higher fragrance load than in many products, which matters if you are fragrance-sensitive. Preservative systems are the other common cause of reaction, and some preservatives release formaldehyde under heat — which is why this page has a separate transparency section rather than relying on the word “cysteine” to reassure you.

Every item below is currently being promised by someone selling this treatment. None of it is achievable by any of the four systems.
Why this matters more here than elsewhere. On every other page in this series you at least know what you are buying. Here the same money, the same chair and the same word can buy you a coating that rinses away or a permanent alteration to your hair’s structure. Ask which one before you agree, not after.
The appointment
Eight stages, with one crucial fork: a thioglycolate system adds a neutralising step that the coating systems do not have. If stage seven happens to you, your hair has been changed semi-permanently.
Stage 1 · 10–15 minutes
Curl pattern, porosity, elasticity, scalp condition and every previous chemical service are recorded. This is also the moment to ask the only question that really matters: which product, and does it require a neutraliser?
Stage 2 · 20–30 minutes
A hidden section is processed exactly as the full head would be and assessed for elasticity, colour shift and breakage. On a thioglycolate system this is not a formality — the result cannot be undone, so the test is your only preview.
Stage 3 · 10–20 minutes
One or two clarifying washes remove silicone buildup and hard-water minerals so the reducing system meets the fibre evenly. Patchy processing almost always starts here.
Stage 4 · 10 minutes
Hair is brought to a defined dampness — usually around eighty per cent dry — and divided into fine sections. Too wet and the product dilutes unevenly; too dry and it will not distribute.
Stage 5 · 20–40 minutes
The reducing formulation is applied section by section along the lengths, starting a short distance from the roots and combed through. Product on the scalp achieves nothing and increases irritation.
Stage 6 · 20–60 minutes
The product acts for the specified period. On a thioglycolate system the hair is usually held straight with a comb or board during this stage — the tension is part of the mechanism, and it is also a strong clue about which service you are having.
Stage 7 · 20–50 minutes
Here the systems separate. A thioglycolate service rinses and then applies a neutraliser — an oxidising lotion that permanently refixes the bonds in their new position. A coating or mild-thiol service skips this entirely and goes straight to drying and ironing. If a second product is applied after rinsing, your hair has been changed semi-permanently.
Stage 8 · 10–20 minutes
You should leave with the exact product name, whether a neutraliser was used, the iron temperature, when you may first wash, and whether to expect a regrowth line. That last item is not a detail — it determines what your hair looks like in six months.
Total appointment: typically 2 to 5 hours depending on the system. Thioglycolate services run longest because of the neutralising stage; coating services are quickest.

Why people book it
Stated at the level the evidence supports. Every outcome depends on formulation, hair pattern, damage level, porosity, heat exposure and aftercare — results vary substantially, and honest providers say so.

Conditioning agents and deposited proteins leave the hand feel markedly better, which is a large part of the day-one impression.
Uniquely in this category you can choose: a coating that fades evenly, or a bond alteration that lasts until it grows out. That is a genuine advantage — provided you are told which you are buying.
It does not repair damage, treat hair loss, grow hair, remove split ends or fix a scalp condition. And “smoothening” is not a milder category than keratin or rebonding — it may be either of them.

Decision guide
Because “smoothening” can mean four things, the useful question is which of the four your goal actually calls for.
Limitations
A coating system and a thioglycolate system do not carry the same risks at all. This is the other reason the category name is a problem.
The signature failure of the reducing systems. Too long on the hair or too high a pH opens more bonds than intended, leaving hair limp when wet, over-stretchy and prone to snapping. Often not obvious on the day.
Ironing hair whose bonds are partially open is the riskiest moment of any of these appointments. Temperature discipline matters most on bleached and fine hair.
Reduction plus heat costs some lipid and some protein. A well-conditioned formula offsets much of it; a bare one does not.
Fine hair relaxes quickly and can end up flatter than intended. Shorter processing and a lower iron temperature are the levers.
Alkaline conditions can lift and shift colour, particularly on ash and cool shades. Space colour services apart and strand test if your shade matters.
Not a physical risk but the most common real-world harm here: a client who wanted something temporary discovers a hard regrowth border months later. One question in the chair prevents it entirely.
Thioglycolate creams on a scratched or inflamed scalp sting and can burn. Fragrance and preservatives are the other common causes of reaction.
Porosity varies along the length, particularly on coloured hair, so the mid-lengths may process differently from the ends. Fine sectioning and even application are the fix.
A persistent or spreading scalp rash, blistering or swelling; breathing difficulty, wheeze or a persistent cough; or sudden increased shedding after the appointment. See a doctor and name the product used.
Transparency
“Smoothening” describes a commercial category, not a formulation and not a mechanism. Everything that matters — permanence, regrowth, risk profile, aftercare — follows from the product, and the product is the one thing the name never tells you.
Two salons both offering smoothening may be performing a temporary coating and a semi-permanent bond alteration. Ask for the exact product name and read the panel.
Coating systems in this category carry the documented formaldehyde history. The claim needs verifying for the specific bottle, including releasing preservatives that liberate it under heat.
Anything volatile in the formula behaves differently at 200 °C than in the bottle. Ventilation is not a luxury in a room where irons are running all day.
The single most informative question available to you. A neutralising or fixing lotion after rinsing means thioglycolate chemistry and a semi-permanent result.
Stinging eyes, a burning throat or coughing during the ironing stage is not a normal part of a cysteine service. Say so immediately and step out of the room.
Significant scalp burning or breathing discomfort means the treatment should stop, not be endured. No cosmetic finish is worth working through that.

Making it last
Aftercare depends on which system you had. A coating needs protecting from cleansing; a thioglycolate result does not wash out at all and needs protecting from heat and breakage instead. What is universal: wait before the first wash, and use far less heat than you used to.
Non-negotiable after a thioglycolate service, where bonds are still settling — commonly 48 to 72 hours. Coating systems vary. Follow the interval you were given for the product actually used on you.
After a coating, gentle low-sulphate shampoo preserves the result. After a thioglycolate service the result cannot wash out, so cleanser choice is about scalp health and buildup rather than protecting the finish.
Reduction chemistry costs protein, so a light protein treatment genuinely helps after Systems B and C. Alternate with moisture and lipids, and stop if hair starts to feel stiff.
Each wash costs a little of the finish. Two or three times a week in lukewarm water rather than hot will noticeably extend it without letting the scalp suffer.
Your hair has already taken a thermal load at the sealing stage and needs far less styling now. Use a protectant, drop the temperature, and let the treatment do the work you used to do with an iron.
All three shorten the result and stress hair whose bonds have been worked on. Wet hair with clean water and condition before swimming, and rinse straight after.
Cotton friction roughens the alignment you just paid for. A small change that costs nothing after the first purchase.
Hair that feels limp and over-stretchy when wet, or that snaps at the mid-lengths, is telling you it has been reduced enough. Do not book the next one.
A coating can be repeated every three to four months. A thioglycolate service should only ever be reapplied to new growth — overlapping onto already-processed lengths is the classic cause of severe breakage. Say this out loud at your touch-up appointment.
The routine
Disclosure: Hairsncares sells haircare products, so treat this as a category guide rather than a recommendation. Nothing on this list matters as much as knowing which system you had.
Cleans without stripping the deposit you just paid for. This is the default for most people after treatment, and the reason your result lasts weeks rather than days.
Not the enemy. Silicones and film-formers accumulate, and hair that has gone dull and coated is usually asking for one wash of this, not another treatment.
Keeps the cuticle flat between washes without adding weight to a strand that is already carrying a deposit.
Your hair has just received a large protein deposit. The job for the next few weeks is lipids and water, not more protein.
Extends the smooth finish between washes, particularly in monsoon humidity when the deposit starts to thin out.
You will still use a dryer or an iron occasionally. Your hair now needs less heat to look right, so lower the temperature and protect what you do use.
Coconut oil applied before washing has published support for reducing protein loss during the wash itself — one of the few genuinely evidence-backed home habits in haircare.

Medically reviewed
“This is the only treatment name in my clinic where I have to ask the patient what was actually done — because the word itself carries no information. Four different services, one label, and the client is the only person in the transaction who does not know which one they bought.”
I see the consequence of this several times a month. A patient comes in worried about a hard line across her hair a few centimetres from the scalp, convinced something has gone wrong. Nothing has gone wrong. She had a thioglycolate service, her bonds were altered and refixed, and the hair growing in is simply her own. Nobody told her that was what she was buying.
None of the four systems is bad. A coating treatment on frizzy straight hair is a good purchase. A mild cysteine service on wavy hair is a good purchase. A thioglycolate smoothening on healthy coarse hair, chosen deliberately by someone who wants a semi-permanent result, is also a good purchase. The harm sits entirely in the gap between what was bought and what was understood.
So the advice I give is unusually simple for a page like this. Ask one question: will a neutraliser be applied after rinsing? If the answer is yes, your hair is being changed until you cut it off. If the answer is no, it will fade. Everything else on this page is detail around that single fork.
And the one absolute: if your hair is bleached, a thioglycolate system is the highest-risk combination in this entire category. Reduction and oxidative refixing on a disulphide network that bleach has already damaged is how people lose length. On that profile the answer is not a gentler protocol — it is a different treatment.

Learn from these first
These are the errors that turn up most often in clinic after a salon smoothing or straightening service — some cost you the result, and some cost you the hair. None of them require expertise to avoid, only knowing to ask.
The word covers at least four different chemistries with different permanence, different regrowth behaviour and different risk. Booking the name rather than the service is the root mistake that every other one on this list follows from.
The ranges overlap substantially. A mid-priced quote could be a conditioning service, a coating, a mild reduction or a full one. Price is not a diagnostic.
That phrase is compatible with almost anything. Useful answers name the product, and the ingredient list settles it. If neither is forthcoming, that is itself the answer.
One washes out in weeks, one fades over a few months, one grows out permanently. Booking with the wrong expectation guarantees disappointment regardless of how well it is done.
The marketing softness of a name has no relationship to what is on the trolley. Some of the mildest-sounding services in this category involve the strongest chemistry available.
Aftercare for a coating and aftercare for a reduction are different. Following generic advice can shorten a result you paid for, or fail to protect one that needed protecting.
If you do not know which chemistry you had last time, no one can safely tell you what is appropriate this time. Keep the product name from every service.
Whether you will get a visible line at the root is decided entirely by the chemistry class. It is a reasonable thing to ask before you commit, and a specific answer is available.
Burning, stinging or itching means stop and rinse, whatever the service is called. The name on the menu does not change that.
Because the category is so loosely defined, you often do not know exactly what is being applied. That is a reason for more testing than usual, not less.

A coating system lasts two to four months and fades evenly. A mild thiol system lasts six to ten weeks. A thioglycolate system does not fade at all — it lasts until the treated hair grows out and is cut off, with touch-ups usually every four to six months.
Smoothening aims for a soft natural straightness rather than a poker-straight finish. If you want the latter, ask about rebonding rather than pushing a smoothening protocol harder — extended processing is how hair gets damaged.

Partly because it is not the same treatment. A coating system, a cysteine system and a thioglycolate system have very different product costs and chair times. A quote far below the local range is worth questioning about which product is used.

If your smoothening is thioglycolate-based, it outlasts keratin substantially because it does not wash out. If it is a coating system, they are effectively the same treatment and last the same two to four months.
Nanoplastia is an acid-based coating system, sealed with heat, lasting three to five months with no regrowth line. Smoothening may be similar or may be semi-permanent bond chemistry. The comparison depends entirely on which system you are offered.
Hair botox is purely conditioning with no bond action and no meaningful straightening. It is the gentlest option available and the least effective at changing texture. Smoothening does considerably more, by one of several mechanisms.
Cysteine is one of the systems sold as smoothening — the mild thiol version that fades in six to ten weeks with no line. If a salon offers you a cysteine smoothening, you are being told which system it is, which is a good sign.
Japanese straightening is the most powerful and least forgiving of these services, using strong reduction and thermal reconditioning for permanently straight hair. Smoothening is a step below rebonding, which is itself a step below Japanese straightening.
For hair integrity, the one using the least reduction and the least heat on your particular hair — usually hair botox, then a coating system, then cysteine. For air quality, any verified formaldehyde-free product in a ventilated room. There is no universally safest option.
Yes, but disclose exactly what was done and when, including whether a neutraliser was used. Layering different chemistries on the same length is where the most serious salon outcomes begin.
Ask for the mechanism rather than the name. “A coating treatment that washes out” or “a thioglycolate service with a neutraliser” are unambiguous requests, and a good salon will answer them directly.
