Hydrolysed proteins — also written as hydrolyzed proteins in international searches — are an ingredient family derived from keratin, wheat, silk, rice, soy, collagen and other sources. What is Hydrolysed Protein?

Proteins are made from amino-acid chains. Hydrolysis — a process using water, heat, acid, alkali or enzymes — breaks larger protein structures into smaller peptide fragments. Cosmetic hydrolysates may contain peptides and amino-acid-containing fractions of varying sizes. The peptide size, charge, protein source and the complete formulation shape what the ingredient does in a finished haircare product.

Certain protein fragments may have greater affinity for porous or damaged regions of the fibre — depending on their charge, size and the formula delivering them.

2. Film formation

Protein-derived ingredients may form a temporary conditioning film along the fibre — smooth, flexible, and maintained by continued use.

3. Reduced friction & combability

"Protein overload" is a consumer term, not a precise medical diagnosis. Some users describe stiffness, dryness, tangling or a brittle feel after repeated use of protein-rich products.
